The Four Corners of America

The Four Corners of America is an area in the southwest where the boundaries of four states meet at a point. The Four Corners Monument rests at the junction of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The surrounding desert is largely rural and undeveloped, but tourists flock to the area to enjoy the arid landscape and jump from state to state.

Location

The quadripoint where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet is the only spot in the United States shared by four states; there is also no point shared by more than four states. The Navajo Nation and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, both semi-autonomous native American tribal governments, also have boundaries marked by the Four Corners Monument.

Four Corners Monument

The Four Corners Monument itself consists of a large square surrounding a small bronze disk inscribed with boundary lines and the names of the states. The slab also features the states' names and seals as well as the flags of both the states and the tribal nations. A granite disk which surrounds the bronze disk is emblazoned with the words, "Four states here meet in freedom under God." The monument is maintained by the Najavo Nation and is reached via US Route 160.

The Four Corners is a uniquely unassuming tourist destination and popular day-trip from larger cities, including Las Vegas. Situated among miles of dry, rural landscape, it is the only marker of its kind in the United States. Nowhere else can you straddle four states at once!
